New York is the best-served American city for Umrah, and it shows in the fares. JFK sees more airlines competing for the route to Jeddah than almost anywhere else in the country, and that competition tends to produce both the lowest fares in the country and one of the widest swings between the cheap months and the dear ones.
Here is the shape of the year from JFK, round trip, economy, with a checked bag, for a group travelling together. Treat the figures as typical bands rather than fixed prices, fares move with demand, and we quote each departure live before you book.

The three things this pattern tells you
Ramadan is not expensive to fly to. The mid-$700s in Ramadan against roughly $1,400 in the Christmas week is the reverse of what most people assume. The Ramadan premium is almost entirely in Makkah hotel rooms, not in the air. We set out that pattern in why Makkah hotel prices climb in Ramadan.
Late December is the expensive window, not Ramadan. The week between Christmas and New Year is when American families can travel, and the airlines price it accordingly. If your dates are driven by the school calendar, expect to pay for it, but note that the New Year week can run several hundred dollars cheaper than the Christmas week for a trip only ten days later.
One-stop Gulf and Levant carriers own this route from New York. Airlines connecting through Amman, Doha and Abu Dhabi are usually the cheapest bagged fares out of JFK, and the second leg into Jeddah is short. More on the hubs in choosing your Umrah connection.
The one to watch at JFK
New York is also where the checked-bag trap is easiest to fall into. More European carriers compete for the New York to Middle East market, and more of them sell hand-baggage-only fares, the price you see on the page can be several hundred dollars below the real price once a bag is added. On a family of four that gap adds up quickly. Search with the bag filter on, and read the full picture on baggage before you book the headline fare.
JFK or Newark?
Both work. JFK generally carries the cheaper fare on this route because more carriers serving Jeddah operate from it. Newark is worth a look if you live in northern or central New Jersey, where the drive, the parking and the return trip at five in the morning are part of the real cost.
LaGuardia is not useful here, there are no long-haul options to the region.

Planning around the pattern
If your dates are flexible, late October and the whole of Ramadan are the affordable windows from New York, and they are affordable for different reasons. Autumn is low season everywhere. Ramadan is cheap in the air and expensive on the ground.
If your dates are fixed by school holidays, look at the New Year week rather than the week before Christmas. Ten days later, and usually several hundred dollars cheaper per person.
