Flying home to Bangladesh from the US means a connection and a long day, so getting the routing and timing right really pays off. Many in the US community are heading to Sylhet as well as Dhaka, which shapes the best choices. Here is the full picture, and how we can book it for you.

First: there are no nonstop flights right now

It is worth stating plainly. There are currently no nonstop flights from the USA to Dhaka. Every ticket connects once through a hub. The best hubs sit roughly on the way, so a single, well-chosen stop keeps the trip manageable. Schedules change, so it is always worth checking current routes.

The airlines and their hubs

  • Qatar Airways, via Doha. Top-rated and a popular choice, serving Dhaka and, with an onward connection, Sylhet.
  • Emirates, via Dubai. Comfortable with generous baggage, strong to Dhaka.
  • Etihad, via Abu Dhabi. Comfortable and often well priced.
  • Turkish Airlines, via Istanbul. Good value and service, and useful for Sylhet.

Our best airlines guide compares them in detail.

The main routes

  • To Dhaka (DAC) from US gateways, most often New York (JFK) and Washington (IAD), through the Gulf or Istanbul.
  • To Sylhet (ZYL), popular with the US Bangladeshi community, with Qatar and Turkish serving it through their hubs, or a short domestic hop from Dhaka.
  • To Chittagong (CGP) with an onward connection.
  • From a smaller US city, a short domestic connection to a major gateway opens up better fares.

When it is cheapest

The low-demand weeks, usually late January and February outside any Eid, tend to be cheapest, with autumn also good value. The dearest times are summer, mid to late December, and the days around Eid. For the full set of tips, see the cheapest time to fly.

Tips for a smoother trip

  • Pick one connection, not two, with a layover of about two to four hours.
  • Decide Dhaka or Sylhet up front, as it changes the best routing.
  • Fly from a major gateway for more choice and better prices.
  • Book early for summer, December and Eid.
