From most American cities there is no nonstop to Jeddah. New York, Washington and Los Angeles have Saudia nonstops on some days; everyone else connects once, somewhere between the United States and Saudi Arabia. That connection is not a detail. It sets how long your day is, where you change into ihram, and often the price.
We priced 106 real itineraries from eight US airports in September 2026 for nine passengers travelling together. Here is what that showed about which carriers actually serve American pilgrims, followed by what each hub is like to pass through.
Which airlines kept coming up
Counting how often each carrier appeared in the cheapest fare that included a checked bag:

Royal Jordanian being so far ahead surprises people, because it is not a famous airline in the United States. It is a straightforward one-stop from the East Coast and the Midwest with a short hop at the end, and it is priced to win that traffic.
What each connection is actually like
Amman (AMM), Royal Jordanian. The shortest second leg of any of them: Amman to Jeddah is about two and a half hours. Queen Alia airport is calm and manageable, the Umrah traffic is well understood there, and the prayer facilities are easy to find. The terminal is not enormous, which matters at three in the morning with children.
Doha (DOH), Qatar Airways. The most comfortable option and usually the best aircraft. Hamad International is large — allow time to walk. Connection times are frequently short by design, which is efficient when everything runs and stressful when it does not.
Istanbul (IST), Turkish Airlines. Istanbul is vast. A ninety-minute connection here is a brisk walk, not a rest. Turkish often wins on price from Dallas, Atlanta and Los Angeles, and the food is genuinely good, but budget more time than the itinerary suggests.
Abu Dhabi (AUH), Etihad. Quiet, modern and pleasant, with a smaller crowd than Doha. It appears less often in our data mostly because it is priced higher on these dates, not because it is worse.
Cairo (CAI), Egyptair and Addis Ababa (ADD), Ethiopian. Both turn up as the cheapest option on specific dates. Both work. Facilities are more basic, and if you have an elderly traveller in the group, look at how long the layover is and whether there is somewhere to sit properly.
Paris (CDG) and Amsterdam (AMS), Air France and KLM. Fine airports, but watch the fare type — this is where the hand-baggage-only fares live. We wrote about that in the checked bag trap.
The question that matters more than the airline
Where do you cross the miqat, and are you ready?
If you fly into Jeddah, the aircraft passes over a miqat on the way in and you must already be in ihram. Crews on this route announce it, usually about forty-five minutes before. Practically, this means changing at your connecting airport — not on the aircraft, where the toilets are small and there is a queue.
If you fly into Madinah instead, you do not enter ihram on the way. You arrive, pray at the Prophet’s Mosque, and enter ihram later at Dhul Hulayfah when you travel down to Makkah. Many first-time pilgrims find this much easier, and it is one reason we start most of our groups in Madinah. There is more on that choice in Makkah first or Madinah first.
What we would actually tell you to do
- Check Royal Jordanian, Qatar and Turkish on your dates. One of those three was the cheapest bagged fare in the large majority of our searches.
- Do not buy a connection under two hours at Istanbul, or under ninety minutes anywhere, if you have checked bags or anyone travelling who cannot move quickly.
- Prefer the routing that lands in Madinah if it is close on price and this is your first Umrah.
- Look at arrival time, not just total journey time. Landing in Jeddah at 2 a.m. means your first day is mostly sleep.
