Pilgrims often assume Ramadan is expensive because flights go up. They mostly do not. In our own fare research across eight US airports, a New York to Jeddah round trip in Ramadan came out at $754 — slightly less than the same trip in late November. The flights are not the problem.
The hotels are.
The actual rates
These are the nightly room rates we recorded in September 2026 for real dates, for rooms carrying a free breakfast, within a thousand metres of the mosque. They are per room, before Saudi tax.
Makkah
| Travel window | Hotel | Stars | Walk to the Haram | Per room, per night |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Late October 2026 | Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Hajar | 5 | about 480 m | $402 |
| Late November 2026 | Swissôtel Makkah | 5 | about 480 m | $399 |
| Late December 2026 | Al Ghufran Safwah | 5 | about 480 m | $508 |
| New Year 2027 | Al Ghufran Safwah | 5 | about 480 m | $459 |
| Ramadan, first ashra | Elaf Kinda | 4 | about 480 m | $572 |
| Ramadan, second ashra | Rotana Jabal Omar | 5 | about 480 m | $712 |
| Ramadan, last ten nights | Nour Althuria, Elaf Almaqam | 3 | about 800 m | $567 |
Read the first and fifth rows together, because that is the whole story. In October, $402 buys a five-star room 480 metres from the Haram. In the first ten days of Ramadan, $572 buys a four-star room at the same distance. You are paying 42% more for a lower grade of hotel.
The last row is starker again. During the last ten nights, $567 — more than an October five-star — buys a three-star hotel eight hundred metres out. The five-star towers beside the mosque are not merely expensive by then; at a normal booking horizon they are simply gone.
Madinah
| Travel window | Hotel | Stars | Walk to the mosque | Per room, per night |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Late October 2026 | Maden Hotel | 5 | about 640 m | $293 |
| Late November 2026 | Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick | 5 | about 480 m | $390 |
| Late December 2026 | Crowne Plaza Madinah | 5 | about 480 m | $608 |
| New Year 2027 | Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick | 5 | about 480 m | $333 |
| Ramadan, first ashra | Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick | 5 | about 480 m | $313 |
| Ramadan, second ashra | Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick | 5 | about 480 m | $307 |
| Ramadan, last ten nights | New Madinah Hotel by IHG | 3 | about 480 m | $279 |
Madinah behaves completely differently. A five-star hotel 480 metres from the Prophet’s Mosque cost $313 a night in Ramadan — barely more than the same hotel in a quiet week, and less than half the Makkah rate on the same dates.
Note the December anomaly: Madinah at $608 was dearer than Makkah at $508 that week. That is the Western school holiday, which fills Madinah with families in a way Ramadan does not.
Why the two cities diverge
Makkah’s supply is geographically trapped. There are only so many buildings inside a short walk of the Haram, and in Ramadan every one of them is wanted by more people than it can hold. Price is the only mechanism left.
Madinah has more land, more hotels, and a mosque you can reach comfortably from a wider ring of them. Its peak is real but much flatter.
What to do with this
Spend your budget in Makkah, save it in Madinah. The walk in Makkah is the one you make most often, in the most heat, at the most awkward hours. A closer hotel there is worth real money. In Madinah, a five-star room 640 metres out costs less than a four-star room 480 metres out in Makkah, and the walk is easier.
Consider the first or second ashra. The first ten nights of Ramadan carry most of the blessing people are travelling for and a fraction of the crowd. Our own Ramadan group departures price the first ashra well below the last ten nights, and the first-ashra group stays in a five-star hotel in Madinah.
Accept the extra five minutes. The difference between 480 m and 800 m is roughly four minutes of walking. In the last ten nights it is also the difference between a three-star hotel and no hotel at all.
Share a room. Every figure above is per room. Four sharing a quad pay a quarter each. We go into that arithmetic in quad, triple or double.
Book early, and understand what early means. For the last ten nights of Ramadan, the hotels that will still be near the mosque at a sane price are being held now, not in January.
Every rate on this page is one we actually found and used to build a real package. You can see how it feeds through to a per-person price on any of our Umrah packages — each one names its hotels, its star ratings and the distance to the mosque.
