Taking children to Makkah and Madinah is one of the most rewarding things a family can do, and one of the most tiring. The families who come home happiest are the ones who planned for the children they actually have, not for an idealised trip.
This guide collects the rules, and the practical advice parents share after they get back.
The rules for children
Visas and permits
- Every child needs their own visa, whatever their age. We apply for them together with the parents’ visas.
- Nusuk permits: children under five can generally enter Masjid al-Haram with their parents without a separate permit. Older children need their own Umrah permit, added through the family section of a parent’s Nusuk account.
- Meningitis ACWY vaccine: required for every child aged one and over, at least 10 days before arrival. Talk to your pediatrician early, as not every practice stocks it. More on the vaccine.
Rules on children’s permits have changed several times in recent years. We check the current position when we set up your Nusuk account before you fly.
Does a child need ihram?
A child can enter ihram and perform Umrah. For a baby or toddler, a parent makes the intention on the child’s behalf and carries them through tawaf and sa’i. Older children who understand can make the intention themselves and do the rites with you.
A child’s Umrah is valid. It does not count as the Umrah they may perform later as an adult, so there is no pressure to get every detail perfect. Many families have young children wear ihram only for the rites, then change back.
The best age to go
There is no right answer, but parents tend to fall into three camps:
- Babies in carriers are surprisingly portable. They sleep through tawaf and do not need their own seat on short connections.
- Ages two to five are the hardest. Too heavy to carry for long, too young to walk miles, and quick to overheat or get lost.
- Seven and older can walk, understand what they are doing, and remember it. Many families wait for this window.
If your youngest is two to five, it is not a reason to stay home. It is a reason to choose a closer hotel and plan fewer, shorter trips to the mosque.
Planning a trip that works for children
Choose the hotel for the walk
For families, the hotel decision matters more than anything else. A five minute walk means you can go back for naps, meals and bathroom breaks between prayers. A twenty minute walk, or a shuttle, means you are out for the whole day or not at all.

Start in Madinah
Madinah is calmer, the walks are shorter and the mosque courtyard is easier with children. A few days there first helps with jet lag, which from the US is eight to eleven hours, before the effort of Umrah in Makkah.
Plan tawaf around the children, not the clock
- Late at night or right after Fajr is often calmer, and children may sleep in a carrier.
- Avoid midday in warm months. The marble reflects heat and there is no shade on the mataf.
- Use the upper floors if you have a stroller or a child who needs space. The circuits are longer but far less crowded.
Agree a lost child plan
The Haram is enormous and every gate looks the same. Before you enter:
- Write your phone number and hotel name on a wristband or a card in the child’s pocket.
- Take a photo of your child that day, so you can show what they are wearing.
- Pick one fixed meeting point, such as a specific numbered gate.
- Teach older children to go to a uniformed security officer if they get separated.
Health
Almost every family we speak to says someone got sick. With millions of people from every country in close quarters, colds and coughs are close to guaranteed. Parents on Reddit repeat the same advice:
- Masks in crowded areas, especially for children with asthma.
- Hand sanitizer and your own small prayer mat.
- Water constantly. Zamzam is everywhere in the mosque. Children forget to drink.
- Sleep. An overtired child gets sick faster.
- Bring children’s medicine from home: fever reducer, rehydration salts, and anything your child already uses. Pharmacies in Saudi Arabia are good, but finding the right dose at 2 am is not how you want to spend a night.

What to pack for children
- A lightweight baby carrier for tawaf, even for toddlers
- A compact folding stroller for Madinah, the hotels and the upper floors
- Diapers and wipes for the first couple of days, then buy more there. Unscented if the child is in ihram.
- Snacks they already like
- Light long sleeve clothing and a sun hat for walks outside
- Comfortable shoes and a shoe bag, as shoes come off inside the mosque
- A tablet with downloaded shows for the flight and the hotel, not for the mosque

Expectations
A family Umrah will not look like the Umrah you did as a young adult. You may pray more in your hotel room than you planned. You may do tawaf in the middle of the night because that is when the baby sleeps.
That is fine. Your children will remember the Kaaba, the sound of the adhan in Madinah and drinking Zamzam, and that you brought them.
