Most people flying home to Pakistan, India or Bangladesh are not loyal to one airline. They just want a comfortable trip, a sensible layover, a generous baggage allowance, and a fair price. The good news is that the same handful of excellent carriers serve all three countries, so once you understand the options, choosing is simple. Here is the honest rundown.
First, the big difference: nonstop or not
This changes everything about your choice.
- India: you can fly nonstop. Air India, United and American operate direct flights from gateways like New York, Newark, Chicago, Washington and San Francisco to Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. For other cities you connect.
- Pakistan: there are currently no nonstop flights from the US. You connect through a hub.
- Bangladesh: there are currently no nonstop flights to Dhaka from the US either. You connect through a hub.
So for Pakistan and Bangladesh, and for many India routes, the real question is: whose hub do you want to connect through?
The main hub carriers (all three countries)
- Qatar Airways, via Doha. Consistently top-rated, modern fleet, excellent service, and Doha is an easy, high-quality airport to connect in. Serves Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, the main Indian cities, and Dhaka.
- Emirates, via Dubai. Famous for comfort and entertainment, generous baggage, and a vast network. Strong to all three countries. Dubai is huge, so allow time for the connection.
- Etihad, via Abu Dhabi. Comfortable and often well priced, with a calmer hub than Dubai.
- Turkish Airlines, via Istanbul. Great service, strong value, famous catering, and a wide reach into all three countries. Istanbul is a long way north, so total times can be longer on some routes.
- Saudia and Gulf carriers also serve Pakistan and India, which can be convenient if you are combining the trip with Umrah.
Nonstop options for India
If you are flying to Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru, the nonstop carriers are worth a close look:
- Air India has the widest nonstop network from the US to India.
- United flies nonstop from Newark and San Francisco to Indian hubs.
- American flies nonstop from New York.
Nonstop saves hours and the stress of a connection, though it is not always the cheapest option, so weigh time against price.
How to actually choose
Do not agonise over the airline brand. Line up your real options on your dates and compare four things:
- Total journey time, door to door, including the layover.
- Layover length, not too tight to be risky, not so long it is a waste of a day.
- Baggage allowance, which matters a lot when you are carrying gifts home.
- Price, for the exact dates and cabin you want.
The best airline is simply the one that wins on those four for your specific trip.
