The honest answer is that Umrah from the United States usually costs between $1,900 and $4,500 per person, and the spread comes from four decisions: when you travel, which hotel you choose, how many people share your room, and where you fly from.
Below is how the money actually divides, with the ranges we see when we price real trips for American pilgrims. Where a figure depends on the day you book, we say so.
The short version
For one adult on a 10-night trip outside Ramadan and the December holidays:

The land package figures are our own starting prices for 10-night packages in three, four and five-star hotels. Your quote will name the exact hotels.
Flights: usually 35 to 50 percent of the total
The flight is the biggest single cost for most American pilgrims, and it moves more than any other line.
- East Coast. New York and Washington have Saudia nonstops to Jeddah. Round-trip economy fares commonly sit around $900 to $1,500 outside peak dates.
- Midwest and South. Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta and Detroit connect once, usually through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or Amman. Expect roughly $1,000 to $1,700.
- West Coast. Los Angeles has a Saudia nonstop on some days. Fares tend to run higher, often $1,100 to $1,800.
During the last ten nights of Ramadan and the week between Christmas and New Year, fares can climb well above these ranges. Business class is a different category, commonly $4,000 and up.

Hotels: where the walk decides the price
Hotel rooms in Makkah are priced by how close they are to the Haram, and the difference is steep. A room in the Abraj Al Bait towers, at the edge of the mosque, can cost several times more per night than a well-run hotel fifteen minutes away.
Three things change your hotel cost:
- Distance. Five-star towers at the Haram are the most expensive. Hotels behind the tunnels, or those that rely on a shuttle, are the cheapest.
- Room sharing. Prices are per person, so four people sharing a quad room pay far less each than two people in a double. Moving from quad to double typically adds a few hundred dollars per person on a 10-night trip.
- Season. Ramadan, especially the last ten nights, can double or triple the price of rooms near the mosque.
A useful way to save: Madinah hotels are generally closer and cheaper for the same walk. Many pilgrims choose a simpler hotel in Madinah and put the money into a closer hotel in Makkah, where they walk to the mosque more often and in more heat.

The visa
Every package we sell includes the Umrah visa, issued through Nusuk, so there is no separate charge.
If you travel independently on the Saudi tourist eVisa, the official fee including the mandatory medical insurance is SAR 535, roughly $142. US citizens are eligible, and the tourist visa can be used for Umrah as long as you book your Umrah permit in the Nusuk app. Our visa guide for Americans explains which option fits whom.
The meningitis vaccine
Saudi Arabia requires proof of the meningitis ACWY vaccine for every pilgrim aged one and over, given at least 10 days before arrival. Many US health insurance plans cover it. Without coverage, pharmacies commonly charge somewhere around $120 to $200 per dose. Check your card before paying out of pocket. How to get the certificate.
Transport inside Saudi Arabia
In our packages, the airport transfers and the journey between Makkah and Madinah are included. If you plan your own trip, budget for:
- Jeddah airport to Makkah. A taxi or ride app usually costs more than people expect after a long flight, especially at night.
- Makkah to Madinah. The Haramain high-speed train takes around two and a half hours. Coach and private car are the alternatives.
- Getting around. Taxi fares rise sharply at prayer times and in Ramadan. Pilgrims on forums often recommend local ride apps over hailing a car on the street.
Food
Food is one of the places Umrah is cheaper than people expect. A filling meal from the restaurants and food courts around the Haram usually costs less than a similar meal in an American city. A realiztic range is $15 to $45 per day, depending on whether you eat in hotel restaurants or in the food courts. Five-star packages usually include breakfast, which saves more than it sounds.
Costs nobody mentions
- Checked bag fees on some fares, especially if you plan to bring Zamzam home. Many airlines carry one 5 litre sealed Zamzam container free, but not all. Our Zamzam guide covers the rules.
- An eSIM or local SIM. You will need data for maps, WhatsApp and the Nusuk app. Phone options for Americans.
- A wheelchair or pusher for elderly parents during tawaf and sa’i.
- Laundry on longer trips. Pack light and plan to wash.
- Sadaqah and gifts. Dates, prayer mats, attar and gifts for family back home add up quickly in the markets of Madinah.
How to lower the cost without making the trip harder
- Avoid the three most expensive windows. The last ten nights of Ramadan, the week around New Year, and US spring break weeks.
- Share a room. Traveling as four in one room is the single biggest saving.
- Spend on Makkah, save in Madinah. Closer matters more where you walk more.
- Book three to four months ahead. Hotels near the Haram and reasonable flight fares both go first.
- Be flexible by a day or two. Midweek departures are often cheaper.
- Do not cut the wrong corner. A cheap hotel that adds forty minutes of walking five times a day costs you in energy, and for elderly parents it can decide whether they pray in the mosque at all.
Why two quotes for “the same” package can differ by $1,000
When you compare Umrah packages from the USA, check what is actually in each price:
- Is the flight included, or land only?
- Is the price for a quad room, or a double?
- Are the hotels named, or described as “or similar”?
- Are transfers private or shared, and is the Makkah to Madinah journey included?
- Is the visa included?
- Which dates does the price apply to?
