Columbus has a good airport and no nonstop to anywhere near Saudi Arabia. So the first question for an Ohio pilgrim is not when but from where, and the obvious answer turns out to be the wrong one.
Detroit is closer. Chicago is cheaper. It is not close.
Detroit is roughly a three-hour drive from Columbus. Chicago is roughly five and a half. Most people stop reading there and drive to Detroit.
Here is what we actually found when we priced both across eight travel windows in September 2026, round trip, economy, with a checked bag:

Chicago was cheaper in all eight windows. Not on average — in every one. The median saving was about $400 per person.
For a family of four that is $1,600. For that money you can drive two and a half hours further, park for ten days, and still be several hundred dollars ahead. For a couple it is $800, which is most of a hotel upgrade in Makkah.
The reason is competition. O’Hare is served by more carriers flying to the Middle East than Detroit is, and Royal Jordanian in particular prices Chicago aggressively — it was the cheapest bagged fare from ORD in five of the eight windows.
What about connecting from CMH?
You can fly Columbus to a hub and onward on one ticket. It is the least stressful option on paper: one check-in, bags through to Jeddah, no parking.
Two things to weigh honestly.
It adds a connection to a journey that already has one. Columbus to Chicago or New York, then the long-haul, then the short hop into Jeddah or Madinah. Three flights, two connections, and roughly twenty-two hours door to door.
It is not usually cheaper than driving. The domestic leg is priced into the fare, and on a route with no competition it is priced generously.
Where it genuinely wins: if you are travelling alone, if nobody can drop you at the airport, or if driving five hours before a sixteen-hour flight is not realistic for you. Those are good reasons and they are worth money.

Even at the top of the parking range, Chicago comes out ahead of Detroit by a wide margin on most dates.
Two things to get right if you drive
Leave far more time than you would for a domestic flight. International check-in for a Jeddah departure closes earlier than you expect, and the queue at O’Hare for a Middle East departure is long. Arrive three and a half hours before, not two.
Sort out where the car sits. Ten or eleven days of airport parking is a real cost and it belongs in your budget. Off-airport lots with a shuttle are usually half the price of the terminal garages, and they are used to long stays.
Where you land still matters
Whichever gateway you use, you still choose between arriving in Jeddah and arriving in Madinah — and from Ohio, with a long day already behind you, that choice matters. Landing in Jeddah means being in ihram from your connecting airport onwards. Landing in Madinah means arriving in ordinary clothes and entering ihram a few days later at Dhul Hulayfah, rested.
