When you see an Umrah package at $1,890 per person, there is an assumption buried in it that nobody states clearly enough: four of you are sharing a room.

This is not a trick. It is the industry convention, and it is how group travel has always been priced. But it catches out couples and solo travellers, who reasonably read a per-person price as a price for one person, and then find the real number is several hundred dollars higher.

Here is the arithmetic, using real figures.

Where the number comes from

Hotels sell rooms, not beds. A room in Makkah 480 metres from the Haram cost us $402 a night in late October 2026. That is the price whether one person sleeps in it or four.

So a seven-night package with four nights in Makkah and three in Madinah works like this, per person, when four share:

Per room, per nightNightsRoom totalDivided by 4
Makkah$4024$1,608$402
Madinah$2933$879$219.75
$621.75 per person

Add 20% for Saudi VAT and municipality fees and the hotel component of that package is about $746 per person.

Now change nothing except the number of people in the room.

SharingHotel cost per person, before taxDifference
Four in a quad$621.75
Three in a triple$829.00+$207
Two in a double$1,243.50+$622
One, sole occupancy$2,487.00+$1,865

The flights do not change. The visa does not change. The ground transport barely changes. The entire difference is the room, and it is the single largest lever on the price of an Umrah trip.

What this means for each kind of traveller

A family of four. You are the reason quad pricing exists. Two parents and two children in one room pay the advertised price, straightforwardly. Do check that children need a bed — on most Umrah packages they do, and an infant under two is the only real exception.

A couple. You have three options. Take a double and pay the supplement, which on a seven-night trip is in the region of $600 each. Take a triple with a relative or friend and pay about $200 more each. Or, in some group departures, the two of you share with another couple. Ask; agencies arrange this more often than they advertise.

A solo traveller. Most Umrah groups will place you in a shared room with other pilgrims of the same gender at the quad rate. If you would rather not, sole occupancy is the most expensive way to travel and you should be quoted it honestly and in writing before you commit.

A group of three. A triple is the natural fit. It costs about $200 more each than a quad, and you are not sharing with strangers.

The questions to ask before you book

  • “Is this price per person in a quad?” If the answer is anything other than a clear yes or no, keep asking.
  • “What is the triple and double supplement, in dollars?” A percentage is not an answer.
  • “If I book as a solo traveller, who do I share with?” Same gender is standard. Confirm it.
  • “Do children pay the same?” Usually yes for a bed, and usually free under two without one.
  • “Is the supplement per person or per room?” Both conventions exist. Get it written down.

How we quote it

Every price on this site is per person sharing a quad room, and we say so on every page rather than in a footnote. Triple and double rooms cost more per person; we quote them side by side with the quad price when you ask, so you can see the two numbers next to each other before deciding rather than after.

If you are trying to bring the total down, room sharing is the largest single lever you have, followed by travel dates and then the choice of hotel. Our line-by-line Umrah budget sets out the rest of the costs, and what Makkah hotels cost in Ramadan shows how much the dates move the same room.

Questions

What is a quad room on an Umrah package?
A hotel room with four beds, shared by four pilgrims of the same gender or by one family. Nearly every advertised Umrah price is quoted per person on this basis, because it divides the room rate four ways.
How much more does a double room cost for Umrah?
Roughly double the hotel portion of your price. If four sharing pay about $620 each for hotels on a seven-night trip, two sharing the same standard of room pay about $1,240 each. The flights, visa and transport do not change.
Can a family of four share one room on Umrah?
Yes, and it is the cheapest way for a family to travel. Two adults and two children in one quad room pay the quad rate per person, and children generally need a bed like anyone else.
