Umrah is not complicated, but small mistakes can take the peace out of it, or cost you money before you even leave home. The good news is that nearly all of them are easy to avoid once you know what they are. Here are the ones pilgrims make most often, grouped so you can check yourself off before you go.
A note first: the worship points below reflect mainstream guidance, not a fatwa. If a detail is unclear for your situation, ask a trusted scholar.
Before you book
- Falling for a vague offer. “Five-star near the Haram” with no hotel names is a red flag. Insist on named hotels, your room type, dates, and a written total. Our guide on choosing an Umrah agency lists the questions to ask.
- Chasing the cheapest price blindly. A price far below the market usually hides a far hotel or added costs later. Learn what is fair in what Umrah really costs and how to save honestly in the cheapest time for Umrah.
- Booking a hotel far from the mosque to save a little. You pay for it with every prayer, in time and tired legs. See walking distance to the Haram.
- Leaving the Rawdah booking too late. It is free and timed through Nusuk, and slots fill fast. Book early, as explained in the Rawdah permit guide.
Preparing at home
- Not learning the rite first. Arriving unsure of tawaf and sa’i makes the whole trip stressful. Read how to perform Umrah step by step and Umrah duas before you fly.
- Packing wrong. Scented soap and toiletries become a problem in ihram. Pack unscented, and check the packing list and what not to pack.
- Skipping the health steps. The meningitis vaccine is required for the visa, and simple precautions prevent the common Umrah cold. See the meningitis vaccine guide and how to avoid getting sick.
In ihram
- Forgetting the intention at the miqat. The intention and talbiyah begin your ihram. Crossing the miqat without them is a common slip for those flying in.
- Using scent after entering ihram, including perfumed sunscreen, wipes, or soap.
- Men covering the head, or wearing stitched clothing. The full list is in ihram rules, what you can and cannot do, and men can learn the garments in how to wear ihram.
During tawaf and sa’i
- Losing count. Use a simple counter or app, and do not panic. If genuinely unsure, build on the lower number.
- Not starting level with the Black Stone, or starting tawaf without wudu. Tawaf needs purity, so renew wudu if you break it.
- Pushing into the crush near the Kaaba. The upper levels are calmer and just as valid. This matters most for elderly parents, children, and anyone pregnant.
The biggest mistake of all
Rushing. So many pilgrims treat Umrah like a checklist, hurrying from step to step, and forget to actually be there. You have travelled across the world for this. Slow down in front of the Kaaba. Make long du’a. Sit in the Rawdah without watching the clock. The rite takes a few hours; the memory lasts a lifetime, if you let it.
Let us remove the guesswork
Travelling with an organised group takes most of these mistakes off the table: the visa is handled, hotels are named and close, the rites are explained before you arrive, and someone is always there to ask. See our Umrah packages or request a quote, and start with the first-timer’s checklist.
