The honest version of why a group departure costs less is not very romantic. It is a van.
Where the saving actually comes from
Our ground transport is one Muhabiya Hiace per group of nine: airport pick-up, the transfer between Makkah and Madinah, ziyarat in both cities and the airport drop at the end. The rate card is fixed:
- Round trip on a Madinah-in, Jeddah-out routing: SAR 1,250
- Round trip on a Jeddah-in, Jeddah-out routing: SAR 1,550
- Ziyarat, SAR 300 in each city: SAR 600
At SAR 3.75 to the dollar, a Madinah-routed group pays about $493 for the vehicle for the whole trip. Divided among nine people that is $54.81 each. Divided among three it is $164. Divided among two it is $247.
That is the mechanism. Nothing about the vehicle changes. Only the number of people paying for it.
The same logic applies, less dramatically, to hotel rooms. A firm holding a block of rooms on fixed dates contracts differently from a firm booking two rooms on an open date, and that difference finds its way into the price.
What you get on a group departure
One price covering everything. Flights from your chosen US gateway, the Umrah visa through Nusuk, both hotels with breakfast, every transfer, ziyarat in both cities. You are not assembling this from four suppliers.
Fixed dates that are already checked. Against the visa calendar, against the season, against hotel availability. Nobody is going to tell you in January that the hotel fell through.
Other people who have done this before. On a first Umrah, travelling alongside pilgrims who know where the gates are and what happens next is worth more than most people expect.
A price that is already the low one. Because it was built on a full vehicle and a contracted room block.
What you give up
Date flexibility. The group leaves when the group leaves. If you need to fly on a Tuesday in the third week of a particular month, a group departure probably will not fit.
Hotel choice. The hotels are chosen and named in advance. You can see them before booking — but you cannot swap one for a different tower.
Schedule freedom during ziyarat and transfers. Those run once, for everyone. The rest of the time is entirely your own; nobody is marching you anywhere between prayers.
When private booking is the right answer
- Your dates are immovable and no group matches them.
- You want a specific hotel — a particular tower, a particular view, a particular floor.
- Your party is larger than nine, in which case you are effectively running your own group and should be quoted as one.
- You are combining Umrah with other travel in the Kingdom or the region.
For a party of nine or more, ask to be priced as a private group rather than as individuals joining one. A masjid group, or a family with grandparents and grandchildren, fills a vehicle on its own — which means you get the group price and your own schedule. That is usually the best outcome available to anyone.
The case we would put honestly
If you are two or three people, travelling on dates that a group departure covers, joining the group is almost certainly cheaper and simpler than building the same trip yourself. The transport arithmetic alone is worth over a hundred dollars a head, before anything else.
If you are nine or more, do not join a group. Be the group.
