Few things worry first-time pilgrims more than ihram. Once you put on those two white sheets, a hundred small questions arrive at once. Can I use sunscreen? What if I need the bathroom? What am I actually not allowed to do? This guide answers all of it in plain terms, so you can enter ihram with a calm heart instead of a nervous one.

One note before we start. This is general guidance to help you prepare, not a formal fatwa. The major schools of Islamic law agree on the core rules below, but they differ on some details. If your situation is unusual, ask a trusted local scholar or imam. For the source texts, the rules of ihram rest on the Qur’an, such as Surah al-Baqarah 2:197, and the practice of the Prophet, peace be upon him, recorded on Sunnah.com.

What ihram actually is

Ihram is not just the clothing. It is a sacred state you enter with the intention to perform Umrah, marked by the talbiyah (Labbayk Allahumma labbayk). You enter it at or before the miqat, the set boundary around Makkah. The white garments are the outward sign of an inward state: for these days, you set aside normal comforts and stand before Allah simply and equally with everyone else.

What to wear

  • Men wear two unstitched white sheets: the izar around the waist, and the rida over the shoulders. Underneath and around that, no sewn or fitted clothing. Plain sandals are fine.
  • Women wear normal, modest clothing in any colour (white is not required). Ihram for women is about the intention and modesty, not a special outfit.

What is not allowed in ihram

These are the well-known prohibitions, agreed upon across the schools:

  1. Perfume and scent, on your body, clothes, or hair, once you have entered ihram.
  2. Cutting hair or nails.
  3. Men covering the head with anything that sits on it, such as a cap or turban.
  4. Women wearing the niqab (face veil) or gloves. They still cover the face from non-mahram men with a loose cloth that is not fastened like a niqab.
  5. Sewn or fitted clothing for men, including normal underwear.
  6. Hunting land game.
  7. A marriage contract or proposing marriage.
  8. Intimacy and anything leading to it. This is the most serious, and breaking it before the first release from ihram can invalidate the Umrah.

The questions everyone actually asks

Can I use sunscreen? Yes, as long as it is unscented. Pack a fragrance-free sunscreen before you fly. A perfumed one would break the no-scent rule.

Can I smoke in ihram? According to most scholars, smoking does not invalidate your ihram, but it is best left alone, and many scholars discourage or forbid it in general for its harm. Ihram is a good moment to stop.

What if I pass wind, or need the bathroom? This does not affect your ihram at all. It does break your wudu, so simply make wudu again before any tawaf, which requires purity.

Can I wear a bag, belt, watch, or glasses? Yes. A money belt or small bag, a wristwatch, glasses, a ring, and sandals are all fine. The rule about sewn clothing is about garments worn as clothing, not a belt or a bag.

Can I shower or wash? Yes, you may wash with plain, unscented soap. Just avoid scented products and avoid deliberately pulling out hair.

What about women on their period? A woman on her menses still enters ihram and does everything except the tawaf, which she performs once she is pure. She is not held back from the pilgrimage itself. This follows the well-known guidance the Prophet, peace be upon him, gave to Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her.

If you slip up

If you break a rule by genuine mistake or forgetfulness, there is no blame, and you simply stop and continue. If it was deliberate, some actions carry an expiation (fidyah), such as feeding the needy, fasting, or a sacrifice, depending on what happened. This is exactly the kind of detail to take to a scholar rather than guess at.

You will not be doing this alone

On our group departures, the state of ihram is explained before you reach the miqat, we remind the group of the do’s and don’ts, and there is always someone to ask. Most worries melt away once you see that everyone around you is in the same simple white cloth, focused on the same thing.

To see the full rite step by step, read our guide on how to perform Umrah. If you are packing, our Umrah packing list covers the unscented essentials to bring. When you are ready, request a quote and we will prepare you properly before you fly.

Questions

Can you use sunscreen during ihram?
Yes, if it is unscented. In ihram you must avoid perfume and scented products, so use a plain, fragrance-free sunscreen. A scented one would count as applying perfume, which is not allowed until you leave ihram.
Can men wear underwear in ihram?
The majority of scholars say men should not wear stitched or fitted clothing in ihram, which includes normal underwear. If you have a genuine medical need, ask a trusted scholar, as there may be an expiation (fidyah). Women wear their normal clothing, including underwear.
Does passing wind break your ihram?
No. Passing wind does not break ihram. It does break your wudu, so you would need to make wudu again before tawaf, which requires being in a state of purity.
What is ihram for ladies?
For women, ihram is the intention plus normal modest clothing. There are no special garments. Women do not wear the niqab or gloves while in ihram, but still cover the face in front of non-mahram men with a loose cloth. If in doubt, ask your scholar.
