It is a fair question, and asking it does not mean your faith is weak. You are about to spend your savings and travel across the world with the people you love most. You want to know they will be safe. So let us answer it honestly, with facts, and without either scaring you or brushing your worry aside.

The short answer is this. Every year, millions of pilgrims from every country on earth travel to Makkah and Madinah and come home safely. The two holy cities are among the most carefully organised and protected places anywhere in the world. That is not a slogan. It is the result of decades of planning and billions of riyals of investment.

The holy cities are built around your safety

Caring for pilgrims is not a side task for Saudi Arabia. It is a national duty, and the whole system is built around it.

  • A dedicated authority runs the two mosques. The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque manages crowd flow, cleaning, guidance and services inside and around both mosques, every hour of every day.
  • Security is constant and visible. Large, trained security teams, thousands of cameras and modern crowd control keep the mataf, the walkways and the courtyards moving calmly, even at the busiest times.
  • Medical help is never far. Hospitals and clinics sit beside the mosques, with first aid points, ambulances and multilingual staff ready for anything from heat tiredness to an emergency.
  • Crowds are managed with technology. Entry times, one way routes and live monitoring spread people out so the dangerous crushing of the past does not happen. The calm you feel in the courtyard is engineered, not luck.

What the Saudi government is building for pilgrims

The direction of travel is clear, and it is all about welcoming more pilgrims more comfortably.

  • The Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque have been expanded over many years so that far more people can pray in comfort and shade.
  • The Nusuk platform now lets pilgrims book the Umrah visa, plan their trip and reserve a Rawdah visit from their phone, which removes crowds at counters and makes everything orderly.
  • As part of Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia has set itself the goal of serving many millions more Umrah pilgrims each year, and is building the hotels, transport and technology to do it.
  • You can see the country’s own welcome and official guidance on the government tourism site, Visit Saudi.

When a government invests on this scale to invite you, it also invests to protect you.

Being honest about the wider picture

You may have read headlines about tension in the region, and you may have seen that some governments, including the United States, have raised their travel advisory for Saudi Arabia. We will not pretend otherwise, because you deserve the full picture.

Two things are worth understanding. First, these advisories are driven by events in the wider region and by border areas in the far south of the country, which are hundreds of miles from Makkah and Madinah. The holy cities continue to welcome pilgrims normally. Second, advisories change as situations change, so the right thing to do is to check the live source yourself rather than trust any single headline.

Before you book, and again before you fly, read the current US State Department advisory for Saudi Arabia. If you are a US citizen, enrol free in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so you receive official updates while you are away.

Simple steps for real peace of mind

  • Buy travel insurance that covers medical care, cancellation and supplier failure. It costs little and removes most of what people worry about.
  • Enrol in STEP and keep your passport and documents on you, with photos saved on your phone.
  • Travel with an organised group so you always have a local contact and are never finding your way alone.
  • Follow the guidance of the mosque staff. The one way routes and timed entries exist to keep you safe.
  • Look after your health. Stay hydrated, use the shaded areas, and rest between acts of worship. For most pilgrims, tiredness and dehydration are the real risks, not anything dramatic.

Travelling with us

When you travel on one of our group departures, you are never on your own. You have a preparation call before you fly, a local representative in Saudi Arabia, named hotels a short walk from the mosque, and WhatsApp support until you are home. If a worry comes up, there is always someone to call.

Fear is natural. Let it make you careful, not stop you. The door to the House of Allah is open, and it is well guarded.

Questions

Is Saudi Arabia safe for Umrah?
Millions of pilgrims perform Umrah safely every year. Makkah and Madinah are among the most heavily organised and protected places in the world, with large security and health teams and modern crowd management. Before you travel, check the current advisory from your own government and enrol in your country's traveller programme.
Are Makkah and Madinah safe to visit?
Yes. The two holy cities run year round with huge security, medical and crowd control operations around the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque. Any wider regional concerns in travel advisories relate to border areas far from the holy cities, not to Makkah and Madinah themselves.
Should I buy travel insurance for Umrah?
Yes. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers medical care, trip cancellation and supplier failure. It is inexpensive and gives you real peace of mind.
How can I stay informed before and during my trip?
Check your government's official travel advisory before you book and before you fly, and enrol in its traveller programme so you receive alerts. US citizens can enrol free in STEP. Keep your agency's local contact saved on WhatsApp.
