Almost every pilgrim wants to bring Zamzam home for family, and almost every forum has a thread from someone who was turned away at check in because the container was wrong. The rules are simple once you know them.
The short version
- Bring one official sealed 5 litre container per passenger
- Buy it from authorised sellers or at the airport, not a bottle you filled yourself
- It goes in checked baggage, not your carry on
- Check your airline’s rule, because some carry it free and some count it against your allowance
Why it must be the sealed container
Airlines and Saudi airports generally accept Zamzam only in the factory sealed boxed containers produced for travelers. Bottles filled from the coolers in the Haram, or water bottles packed in a suitcase, are commonly refused.
You can buy the sealed containers:
- At Jeddah and Madinah airports, usually near the check in areas
- From authorised outlets in Makkah and Madinah
Many pilgrims simply buy at the airport before check in, which avoids carrying 5 kilograms through hotels and taxis.
Airline allowances
Airlines that fly pilgrims regularly tend to have a Zamzam policy. Historically:
- Saudia has allowed one sealed 5 litre container per passenger in addition to the normal baggage allowance on flights from Jeddah and Madinah.
- Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways have also allowed 5 litres of Zamzam from Saudi airports, often free and in addition to your allowance.
- Other airlines, including many European carriers, may treat it as a normal checked item that counts toward your weight or number of bags.
These policies change, and they can differ by fare type. Check your airline’s website or ask us before you fly. If you are traveling on a basic economy fare with no checked bag, the Zamzam may cost you a bag fee.
Connecting flights
Most pilgrims flying home to the US connect in Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or Europe. If your Zamzam is in checked baggage and your bags are checked through to your US airport, the connection is not a problem.
It becomes a problem if:
- You have separate tickets and must collect and re-check your bags
- You try to carry Zamzam in your cabin bag. Liquids over 100 ml are not allowed through security at the connecting airport, and US bound flights often have additional screening.
Arriving in the United States
Water for personal use is generally allowed into the US. At US Customs and Border Protection, answer questions honestly. A single sealed container of Zamzam per person rarely raises questions.
If you are also bringing dates, sweets or other food, declare food items on arrival. Dates are commonly allowed, but the rule is to declare and let the officer decide.
Packing tips
- Leave room in your allowance. A 5 litre container weighs over 5 kilograms.
- Do not open the seal before you fly.
- Keep it upright if you can, and away from fragile gifts.
- Label it with your name, as many identical boxes come off the belt.
Sharing it at home
A small amount of Zamzam goes a long way. Many families pour a little into smaller bottles to give as gifts, or mix a little into regular water so more people can share it.
