Once you have tasted your first Umrah, many pilgrims want to do another before they fly home, often for a parent, a grandparent, or someone who has passed away. It is simpler than people think, and it mostly comes down to one thing: where you put on ihram the second time. Here is how to do it properly.
A note first: this is practical guidance, not a fatwa, and scholars hold different views on repeating Umrah, which we cover honestly below. For your own case, ask a trusted scholar. The basis is the practice of the Prophet, peace be upon him, on Sunnah.com.
The one rule that changes: where you enter ihram
For your first Umrah you entered ihram at the miqat before reaching Makkah. But now you are already inside the sacred boundary (the Haram). To perform another Umrah, you must leave that boundary and enter ihram from outside it, then come back.
The nearest and easiest place to do this is the mosque at Tan’eem, widely known as Masjid Aisha, just outside the boundary and a short taxi ride from the Haram. Many pilgrims also use Ji’ranah. This follows the guidance the Prophet, peace be upon him, gave to Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, when he sent her to Tan’eem to begin an Umrah.
The steps, which are the same as any Umrah
- Prepare and travel to Tan’eem. Make ghusl or wudu at your hotel, and go in clean clothes (men can put on ihram at the mosque there).
- Enter ihram at Masjid Aisha. Make the intention for Umrah and begin the talbiyah.
- Return to the Haram and perform tawaf, seven circuits of the Kaaba.
- Pray two rak’ahs, drink Zamzam, then perform sa’i, seven lengths between Safa and Marwah.
- Trim the hair (men shave or trim, women trim a fingertip’s length), which completes the Umrah.
For the words to say throughout, see Umrah duas, step by step, and for the garments, how to wear ihram.
What scholars actually say about repeating Umrah
This is worth knowing so you can decide with a clear heart. Scholars differ:
- Some see no harm in performing extra Umrahs, especially on behalf of deceased loved ones, and value the reward.
- Others note that the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his companions, when staying in Makkah, focused on tawaf and worship rather than repeatedly leaving the boundary to begin new Umrahs. In their view, your time is often better spent in continuous worship at the Haram than in travelling back and forth.
Neither view is wrong. If you do want to perform one for a parent who has passed, our guide on Umrah on behalf of a parent explains how. If in doubt, ask your scholar.
A practical tip
Tan’eem is busiest in the evenings and during Ramadan. Go at a quieter hour, agree your taxi fare both ways or use a ride app, and carry water. Keep it unrushed so it stays a moment of worship, not a chore.
